What are Practical Assessments and what does it involve? Print E-mail

Working in a Natural therapy, Beauty therapy, Massage therapy, Chiropractic or general centre provides you with the opportunity to observe talented practitioners in action, to apply the knowledge and skills described in the learning guide and to talk with more experienced staff about your ideas, doubts and concerns.

It also sets the scene for the on the job component of your assessment.

One of the many positives about competency based assessment is that it looks at your skills and abilities over a period of time. The new system is very different from times past where a supervisor would watch a learner perform a task once…. And if the learner made a mistake they automatically failed and had to repeat the whole unit. Our approach today is much more balanced and realistic. We know that it can be stressful feeling that you have to ‘perform’; we also know that ‘one-off demonstrations of a person’s skills are a poor indicator of a person’s overall ability

So, in order to avoid the stress and the pitfalls, you’ll be observed by your supervisor throughout your course.

Some people feel a little threatened by this-feeling that’s totally understandable. Most of us feel a little nervous if we find ourselves being observed by others, particularly in a relatively new setting.

In you do feel anxious about being observed by your workplace supervisor or trainer, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, it’s highly likely that both your supervisor and facilitator felt the same type of nervousness when they were students. It’s important to remember that your supervisor isn’t trying to ‘trip you up’ or fail you. What she/he is looking for is your:

  • willingness to try new tasks and work as part of a team
  • ability to listen and respond to feedback
  • ability to learn from your experiences and
  • skill in meeting the performance criteria

On the job assessments provide you a wonderful opportunity to prove how competent you can be on the job … and, in the end, isn’t that what you’re aiming for?
